Paul Lisi and Ken went to get about 3500 office style recycling containers in Seattle. They are desksize waste basket type, 13 quart. Thank You! There was a reporter that took pictures of them and is writing a story. The containers have aluminum, no liquids printed on them. They need to be cleaned out. We can put a LR sticker over the text. Everybody that can will take about 20 each home and clean them out so we can give them out if needed. There was a discussion about what/how to distribute the containers. We will continue this discussion at the October meeting. Betty Palmer suggested that we should contact the High School to find out if there are any seniors that need to put in volunteer hours. They could help us clean out the recycling bins. Lisi will call Aleah at the High School. Lisi has purchased gifts made out of recycled materials for Salmon Fest as well as the Koho recycling trivia contest. Salmon Fest. John had t-shirts to show us. We decided on printing the Leavenworth design on light green for the volunteers at Salmon Fest. If we need more t-shirts with different designs the price will be the same. Betty Palmer presented her work on Various Sustainability. We thank Betty for coming. She will put some of her ideas and what kind of support she wants from Leavenworth Recycles in writing. Thank you for the time and opportunity at the board meeting last night. I do know that this sounds like a jumble of targets and no particular focus. I haven't yet figured out how to separate this project out as it is very large and has many inputs, options and possibilities. However, I can clearly state that my present goal is to secure support and technical assistance from relevant players, to apply for a Public Participation Grant through the D.O.E. for an inventory of all feedstocks watershed by watershed in Chelan County; who has what to dispose of, where does it go, and to get this inventory into a GIS for long term planning and monitoring. Ultimately, I'd like to see this information be used to either locate or create markets and to incorporate emerging technologies locally for jobs and a sustainable economy and healthier environment. This is my goal, it's what I'm asking of Leavenworth Recycles and EAT, and IRIS and, eventually, the Icicle Fund. As these talks go on, the project and possibilities and needs expand greatly. My perception is that we need to be building support for a much more comprehensive approach to solid waste management in this community. We have a number of challenges and opportunities, including the general lack of public awareness of waste reduction, recycling and resource conservation; the patchwork of different recycling systems; the municipal burn ban which has triggered a need for alternative ways to deal with yard waste; the need to address the burn first attitude in outlying areas/orchards; the challenge of forest land fuels reduction; clean air issues as per the tourism industry and health department concerns; and changing our viewpoints so that we look at these aspects of waste as a commodity that has value. I also hope to help communities solve problems that arent being attended to (Plain, for example!). I am very interested in pro-active diversion opportunities so to reduce the need to manage and mine landfills as a reactionary problem to be addressed later and at great expense.I am very interested in the possibilities to develop training and job opportunities for the community and to move us towards a more sustainable economy that includes these emerging technologies and industries. Personally, I believe that if the County had taken a pro-active position some number of years ago, these issues would have at least been identified and addressed if not solved. I simply want to generate interest in our communities so to do what hasn't yet been done as there doesn't seem to be much indication that it will be attended to from the County Government. I also believe that people and businesses will respond to these actions better if they come from the citizenry and if there is a strong and identifiable financial/economic component/benefit that they can see. I will greatly appreciate your feedback, no matter the form it comes in! I am meeting with IRIS folks on Friday afternoon to determine if this is going to be presented before their quarterly board meeting next week.
